I'm experiencing similar issues. I recently upgraded to Pro 10 on my PC but found that the thumbnail of a large number of photos did not display. On closer inspection found that the only difference between the photos that had a thumbnail and those that didn't was that the IPTC and EXIF metadata was embedded vs not being embedded. I have checked with Pro 8 (still installed) and the metadata still exists. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Pro 10 without change. Photos are all .TIFF on my local drive. Any clues please? Peter.

Hi David, just had a few more instances of problems with thumbnails. All on the MacBook Pro internal SSD. Selected several photos and drag/dropped to different folder in the 'Devices' part of the navigator window in PS. Started console and had the following items appear shortly after all the remaining icons disappeared. I'd had to restart PS about 3 times due to all the thumbnails disappearing after moving images sometimes in separate Finder window and sometimes in PS (sorry, was multitasking and not sure exactly which problems when, but think both after moving with PS and in Finder, but images show in finder).
On one of the occasions, all the thumbnails vanished in PS for the folder that had been modified and neither command-R nor changing to another folder and back caused them to reappear. Exiting and navigating to folder they were all back fine.
      I'm still running El Capitan 10.11.6 (15G1421)

I should note it had been working fine for about an hour looking at some other photos/dir and all the dirs only had .jpg files. Have only had the issue of thumbnails vanishing in dirs once or twice since last time I'd mailed and couldn't replicate despite lots of clicking. Sorry.
Good luck (Its still my favourite viewer & basic editor!)

Hi, in case it helps, another console message on latest occurrence of missing thumbnails when changing folders in manage mode:
10/04/2017 23:53:03.242 iconservicesagent[366]: -[ISGenerateImageOp generateImageWithCompletion:] Failed to composit image for descriptor <ISBindingImageDescriptor: 0x7fce51c15ee0>.

In this instance, had previously clicked on folder in 'Devices' folder navigator on left, then used cursors to change through a few dirs slowly. As usual it worked fine again after moving back up to another folder then back down to the same one (ie. thumbnails appeared as expected 2nd time).
          Keep up the good work
          Baz

            Hi Baz,

Thank you for all the helpful feedback.

To confirm, is the issue that you mention in your comment on April 6 the same as the issue you described on March 15 (http://forum.acdsee.com/forum/acdsee...0937#post40937) ?

That is, when you say thumbnails are disappearing, do you mean there is nothing at all in the file list to indicate a file is there? Or do you mean there is a placeholder icon (with ACDSee logo), but no image thumbnail?

I'm not able to reproduce the issue but I am curious about the Console message "dnssd_clientstub deliver_request: socketpair failed 24 (Too many open files)". Prior to experiencing the issue, had you been browsing a lot of images?

            Thanks again for your assistance,

            David

Hi David. Yes, the same issue that the directory is shown with no icons at all. Yes, I had been browsing through lots of images and directories, on the internal SSD. I've had the same issue on both internal MacBook Pro SSD and external Western Digital MyPassport drive. I think you could be onto something!

The recent issues have generally happened after browsing a lot of dirs (and previously only after repeatedly viewing several dirs lots of times), so maybe something not closing the files or freeing unit numbers? Once it occurs, the recent times have then happened much more frequently (sometime several dirs in a row will show blank then one show ok, then show blank again).

Recently, I've twice had to exit PS completely for normal behaviour to resume. (I'm still on El Capitan 10.11.6 in case related to any MacOs updates). I've just downloaded the new Beta, so will hopefully get a chance to test/report over the weekend.

              Cheers,
              Barry

                Hi Barry,

Just wondering if you've had a chance to try Beta 4.
Would love to hear any feedback you have.

                Best regards,
                David

Hi David, sorry not had much chance to play, although when I have, it's been much better than previous version
Haven't been using external drive (will be over w/e hopefully), but internal drive behaving better, but had a couple of problems with v4 still (I think after update)
(MacOs 10.11.6, all current OS updates applied)

                  But...
Just been had another related issue with thumbnails (in v4 beta) in Manage mode.
After reading several folders which hadn’t been read before (several 100 images, thumbnails generated on the fly, even when left folder before finished). Then I got to a folder (69 .jpg) and it just showed blank thumbnail placeholder icons (blank with white dotted lines as appears before it generates the thumbnail).
I waited a few seconds, nothing happened. I mouse clicked on devices panel back to parent and back in, still didn’t generate the thumbnails. I tried <cmd>-r to refresh, still nothing. Switching to list then back to thumbnail made no difference.
I went to the next new folder and all worked as normal (generated new images after briefly showing the blank placeholders).
Went back to original problem dir. Still didn’t generate thumbnails.

I quit the app and restarted, but went straight to the problem folder via the left hand side navigator, but still just the blank placeholder icons in main (central) window.
I can view the images ok by double clicking on them, but still no thumbnails.
Went up a dir and used menu to get database maintenance. Showed 9,858 items on (internal Solid state) Hard Drive and 14 orphans. Also 1 network (1 item, 0 orphan)
Tried doing optimise database… no change

Went to ‘view’ mode, still just blank thumbnails displayed for folder in question.

A could of console logs to follow...
                  Barry

(ah, the ':' and 'o' being picked up in console output)
After quitting the app and restarting, the following console info appeared (as well as an apparent repeat of most of the above):

19/05/2017 16:29:36.534 ACDSee Beta[12972]: [Crashlytics:Crash] Warning: NSApplicationCrashOnExceptions is not set. This will result in poor top-level uncaught exception reporting.

I've now done another optimise database, exited and restarted, tried another dir (worked fine), then navigated with navigator window back to the problem dir... and still blank thumbnails.
I've just tried deleting the database, PS restarted, but still the same problem on that dir... weird! That dir (and others) has a .picasa.ini and .DS_store file, but otherwise only .jpg files from the same camera as the ones that are working. I've viewed this dir in the past and thumbnails have worked (probably with beta 3 or older PS)

Hopefully just a one off oddity... but I'll keep trying to break it all for you!
                          Hope that helps?

David, on a presumably slightly different thumbnail issue... I note that trying to drag/drop multiple thumbnails is p...a......i....n...f.....u.....l.....l....y slow. Selecting multiple thumbnails is fine (e.g. using <cmd> with mouse for non-sequential selection), but then trying to drag them from the central window to a new folder in the left hand navigator window (in manage mode) then takes many seconds (increasing with the number of files selected). I've just tried and in list view it responded very quickly (near instant), but swapping to thumbnail mode it takes a couple of seconds for the pointer to respond once dragged over a folder on the left hand navigator panel. This is the same if doing to move or copy (using <alt> key). I just tried and note the following error in the console window (repeated about 20 times from the dragging 4 images):

19/05/2017 18:03:40.746 ACDSee Beta[13283]: ____CFPasteboardIssueSandboxExtensionForFileURL_bl ock_invoke : Lock timeout attempting set sandbox extension to pasteboard

This occurs when dragging from/to folders on the same (internal) drive.

Once the photos are selected (either by mouse or keyboard, contiguous or random), trying to drag the pointer takes time before the '+' appears (if <alt> used) or for highlighting of the large folder to occur. If the selection is release before the highlighting happens, no copy/move is done... you need to sit and wait (sometimes 20+ seconds) for the system to catch up. Quite annoying when doing frequently... but at least it works eventually, which is good

                            Have fun,
                            Barry

On the missing thumbnails in 1 folder problem, I've just copied an image from a folder which works normally (using the drag/drop <alt>) and the thumbnail of the copied photo shows up fine, although the rest of the photos still have the blank placeholder icon. Doing <cmd>-r causes the screen to briefly 'flash' as usual, the 'good' thumbnail is still shown, while the others aren't.

The working image is from a Canon Powershot S120 and displays it's EXIF info etc. in the 'Properties' panel.
The non-working images don't show any File or EXIF info, as though the file just isn't being read. Using the normal MacOs Finder, I note the problem images are Canon EOS 300D images and report a created date of 1st Jan 1970, although modified date is ok at 18th May 2014. So possibly relating to some file system attribute? (possibly from Google Picasa writing to the file to embed face info...would be nice if PS could read that )... although, other folders of EOS 300D work fine.

The command line shows files to be readable and user writeable. As with most of the files in working dir, some have 'xattr' reporting quarantine status and a mix of rwxr--r-- and rwxrwxrwx file permissions.

I'll try to investigate the strange file creation times. Presumably a missing attribute so defaulting to the start of unix time...?)
                              Good luck!

David - OK, todays issue of blank thumbnails - SOLVED!!! Well, maybe...

It looks like it's the crazy file creation timestamp! Not sure why causing your software a problem, but I just 'rsync'ed the directory, so the files were copied with keywords to maintain file permissions and timestamps (modify/access times). Using command line 'ls -lU' shows the file creation times of the source files as 1st Jan 1970, but as hoped, the new copy has todays time (although the modified times are still set as 2014). Note navigator was in 'list' mode when I went to see if new thumbnails generated... but think it's more likely some underlying issue on accessing the files (although MacOs Finder was happy to list them and show the thumbnail and EXIF etc.)

Hopefully you can find the issue with PS reading the files with strange file system creation timestamp (doubt that timestamp used by most people, normally modified of more importance with EXIF original time being more relevant). If I find why the creation times were strange, I'll let you know. One possibility is these files may have been created in place via a virtual box windows 7 direct mount, so a MacOS / Windows cross-mounting issue not handling file creation times well. Specifically in my case, the files may have had the GPS location added to them by GeoSetter (Windows program I use to add GPS info to photos, e.g. by dragging to single location on a map, or frequently by using it to sync photos to .gpx track from iPhone GPS record created by ViewRanger app).

Hopefully helps narrow down 1 task at least ...now if you can just include the syncing GPS track (allowing for time shifts and clearly/felxibly handling timezone difference of .gpx and image time)... that'd be great!
I'll leave you in peace for a while... hopefully!
