  • gone slow

My copy has suddenly gone very slow. I offload photos onto my mac, and then look at them with ACDSee, and it used to be very quick to generate thumbnails. Now it takes a couple of minutes before it starts generating them. I have tried emptying the database etc, but doesn't make any difference. Any ideas?

          Hi CornishBoy,

Sorry for the delayed reply. May I ask some questions:

          1) Where are the images located? On a local drive, removable drive, network share, etc?
          2) What type of images are they? RAW, jpg, or something else? What camera model are they from? How big is the filesize on average?
          3) How many images are in the folder that is slow?

          Best regards,
          David

            Hi CornishBoy,

One more question, what Sort method are you using in ACDSee?

            Thank you,
            David

Thanks for getting back to me. The images are all on local drives. They are a mixture of raw and jpg, and are from Nikon D800 and D750. Average file size of the jpg's is about 12mb. All folders are slow on generating thumbnails. If I leave it for a few minutes it will start generating the thumbnails. But when I first installed, it would start generating thumbnails as soon as the images were placed into a folder. Sort method is by name

                  Hi CornishBoy,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been trying to reproduce your issue but I am not able to.
Please provide details regarding your environment, e.g. Hardware and OS version.
Please also provide the output of Console.app (filtered to only show logs from ACDSee) while browsing a folder that is slow.

                  Thank you,
                  David

Just started to convert from Lightroom and I an suddenly having the same problem. 61 seconds to load previews of 768 images and 5 minutes and 20 seconds to load previews of 1380 images. When I ran the demo version, I never had this type of lag. The images are mostly from Nikon D600. My system is an iMac 2017, 3GHz Intel Core i5 and High Sierra 10.13.6. Was there ever a resolution to your problem?

                      Hi MacHopper,

Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate the detail you've provided in your report.

I've tested with up to 2000 Nikon D600 RAW images and wasn't able to reproduce the issue as you described.

                      May I ask some questions:
                      1) How many images are currently in your ACDSee database? You can find this by clicking the "Image Well" in the Organize pane on the right-hand side of Manage mode. The number of images will be displayed in the Status Bar at the bottom of the app.
                      2) What kind of disk does your Mac have (e.g. SSD, HDD, Hybrid, etc)?
                      3) Where are the images located (e.g. local, Removable, or Shared volume)?
                      4) Have you previously assigned metadata such as Keywords or Categories etc to your images (for example, using Lightroom)? If so, do you have a lot of metadata assigned to your images?
                      5) When you experience this issue, do you see any errors or warnings from ACDSee in Console.app? If so, could you share them with me?

                      Regards,
                      David

Images in database = 32259. Images are on an external USB standard hard drive. I had assigned keywords, titles and descriptions to all of the images. Maybe an average of 3 keywords per image, while the descriptions are often only 2 words. I have a second catalog with about 5400 images, and a similar setup for the keywords, titles and descriptions, I have no issues with that database. I am not where I can check the Console.app right now, but I will do so and look for errors or warnings. Thanks for the quick reply.

                          Hi MacHopper,

Thank you for the quick reply. I've reviewed this case with the product and development team and we are currently investigating. Please do let me know if you notice anything in Console.app.

Also one more question: I understand you experienced a delay when loading the thumbnail previews. Once they've all been loaded, does the issue recur on subsequent visits to that folder? Or is the delay only the first time?

                          Regards,
                          David

David the time delays are about the same no matter how many times I go between folders.

I have attached a console.app dump of the last opening of the folder that has 768 images in it.

                            Thanks again for the assistance.

David, as a follow up to my last post, I transferred 2 folders to the internal drive on my iMac, again a standard drive. One folder was the one I noted above with the 793 images and the other was a smaller folder with 105 images. I compared the times for previews to appear when switching between folders, for the larger folder it was about 58 seconds. I had thought that the external drive might have been the issue, but a 2 to 3 second difference is to me a reasonable timing error.

I have developed a work around to prevent the need of having to switch folders as often, but the slowness is still a pain.
