  • PS 5 for Mac - Additional filter for Ratings

As I understand it, when I click on a Rating in the Organize Panel I am presented with ALL Pictures in ALL the folders shown in the left "Folder Pane" which have that rating assigned to them. This is not very useful to me as the Folder Pane seems to show everything on my hard-drive and connected to my computer.

I would love to see a way to limit this function with other restrictions. For example:
    • To select all pictures with the specified rating, BUT only in a specific folder. e.g. I have a folder with all pictures of a given event and would like to see all pictures with the specified rating but only from that event.
    • To select all pictures with the specified rating, BUT only in a selected group of folders.
    • To select all pictures with one OR another OR yet another rating. e.g. this would allow me to see pictures from an event with a rating of 2 or 3.
    • To select all pictures with the specified rating OR a higher rating. e.g. this would show the pictures of an event which have a rating of 3 or higher.
    • To select all pictures with the specified rating OR a lower rating. e.g. this would show the pictures of an event which have a rating of 3 or lower.
    • A combination of the "selection criteria for folders and general locations of pictures" and "ratings and combination of ratings" as filter.
    Hope this makes sense.

Along the same line: I would love to see a way to limit the other filters in the "Organize panel" similarly. For example:
    • Search for pictures in a given folder or set of selected folder with a specific label or several labels. e.g. All pictures contained in Folder A or Folder B with either a Red and/or a Blue label. etc
    • Search for pictures in a given folder or set of selected folder with a specific keyword or keywords.
    • Search for pictures in a given folder or set of selected folder with a specific date, or within a range of dates, or outside of a range of dates, etc.
Without these filter options all except for the Calendar feature are somewhat useless to me.

      Hello,

The Quick Search feature allows you to "Search Selected Folders Only". Next to the spyglass icon select the drop-down and you'll find that option. With that option selected drag & drop a rating into the text field to search a rating and only in that folder. Same idea applies to keywords, labels and categories.

In the folder tree you can also select a range of folder by holding down the shift key. Or, select individual folders by holding down the command key and clicking the folders you want to be included.

For more info, in the help file read "Using the Quick Search Bar".

      I hope this helps.

      Regards,
      Mark

Thanks Mark. That works just fine.

Now I have a second, related question which I hope you have an answer for as well:
Is there a way to "Hide" folders in the folder pane for ever? I keep my pictures in a very small number of folders on my mac. But as you know, each time one opens PS for mac the application shows each and every folder in and around the computer. In my case that is a looooong list of folders, most of which do not contain any pictures and have no use in PS for Mac. For example: Bookmarks, Applications, Library, System, Users, and many more. I have tried to close the key folders using the little triangle left of their name. That works for the moment. But as soon as I close and re-open the application, they all appear again. I also tried to move my picture related folders into the FAVOURITES. But again, as soon as I close and re-open the application the whole long list is back. And the application does not seem to be able to point to any of the folders in the FAVOURITES as the opening folder. I know, if I have a folder called PICTURES in my Favourites I can click on it and work with my pictures. But next time I open the app, it points to the actual PICTURE folder in the folder list, and therefore opens the folders in that list.

The best solution I have found so far is to set my preferences to use "Folder from previous session" since I work exclusively with my picture folders, or set one of those folder as my home folder. But I still wish I could hide all those other folders. They just mess up my "work environment".

Thanks again for your initial answer related to the "additional filters" That really does work for me.

          Hello,

Sorry but at this time you cannot customize the folder tree. But we have considered a feature on ACDSee Windows & macOS that would allow you to customize the folder tree. Something for us to consider in a future release.

          Regards,
          Mark
