  • Search pane

I am a long time AcdSee user but I didn't find how to search two or more keywords using the AND operator in the search pane. In quick search if I type: "ceresole marmotta" I get all pictures containing those keywords, quick and easy. But what if I wish to save a search ?
If I type the same text in search pane field "with text" and I have ticked "find all words" AcdSee finds nothing. If I un-tick "find all words" it find all pictures that contains ceresole OR marmotta, but this is not what I wish to search.
I also tried to search properties, I added Keywords then Contains and the text "ceresole marmotta" (I also tried "ceresole, marmotta") but it finds nothing. If I search Keywords is any of ceresole, marmotta it finds all photo with one of the two keywords.
Of course AcdSee help doesn't help
Does anybody knows how to search keywords using AND operator ?
Also it would be useful to know how to combine keywords and rating, for example search for ceresole and marmotta with rating > 3

Frankly the search pane in my view is at best pretty agricultural, and also somewhat buggy to the point where I don't bother with it any more.

As an example, a simple search with properties set to "Latitude contains 34, 54' 28" will find photos taken at that latitude, but try and save that search and ACDSee obligingly removes the comma after 34, so the saved search becomes "Latitude contains 34 54' 28" which finds nothing.

As far as I am aware, AND OR etc operators are not catered for, but I'm happy for some one to tell me I'm wrong about that and show me how to use them if they can be used.

I also haven't been able to get "is any of" to work with multiple words, again maybe that is something I'm doing wrong.

I can compound a search in properties, for example by searching for "Latitude contains 34, 54' 28" and "Caption contains Garage" and that works, but unfortunately in the properties area ACDSee won't allow two search parameters for the same subject, so I can't use "keyword contains Fred" and "keyword contains Mabel" to find photos containing both keywords Fred and Mabel..

Searches for "Keyword contains Fred" or "Keyword contains Mabel" individually find the respective photos, but a search on "Keyword is any of Fred, Mabel" or any likely combination "Fred Mabel", or "Fred, Mabel," or "Fred + Mabel" etc that I can think of finds nothing, even though there are lots of photos containing both the keywords Fred and Mabel.

One fudge with keywords is to set "With the text Fred" and set that to search in keywords, and also set the properties to "Keyword contains Mabel"

I find it quicker and way less frustrating to use the left hand Catalog pane and click on those keywords I want combined.

Imho "archaic" is a good adjective for the performance of the search tool.

Afaik there is no AND function, but the option "is one of" with comma as separator e.g. "cat, dog" at least provides the OR function. BTW: Every OR (or comma) doubles the search time!

If your files and paths names contain the phrases you are searching for Everything is 1.000 times faster.

        Emil,
The mystery deepens. In my copy of Ultimate 2021 there is no "is one of", the nearest being "is any of" and with that set as "is any of Fred, Mabel" or "is any of Fred, Mabel," it finds nothing.

So what version are you using, and it is Windows or Mac. (I'm using the Windows version 14.0 build 2451).
In my version the only options are "is", "is any of", "contains", and "starts with", and for the record "Contains Fred, Mabel" doesn't find anything either.

Oops, wrong translation. It indeed is "is any of" (I use a German version).

I think the search pane is useless to the point of irrelevance. I can get to any file I want with judcious use of the quick-search bar. Especially now that the scope can be restricted to the contents of the file window.

AcdeSee support confirmed search pane is kind of useless. They suggest to use Catalog pane, choose "Match All" from the small gear icon near Keywords. Now when selecting more than one keyword they are combined with AND operator. It also possible to add rating, categories, labels...

An update. I reported the bug in the Save Search function where it removes the comma, as mentioned in post #2 in this thread. Support have confirmed they are able to reproduce the bug and have reported it (presumably to developers). Will be interesting to see if the fix makes it into U2022.

If the co-ordinates are entered manually however, the search however works, and that is one type of search that can't be done in Catalog, so maybe the search pane isn't completely useless.

Yep! I wonder if they still got the source code🙄 This one is at least eight years old.
