  • Catastrophic crash !

Well we all know that ACDsee is pretty flaky (well it is on my PC), I just finished a pretty large re-org of my Florida section of images, in doing so it highlighted a general problem that I have with a lot of scanned images where the filename have been given different formats (prefix/suffix) over the years that is causing me a lot of work trying to match things up so the final task for the day was a rename of around 7000 of them to get them in line with other filename formats, there were some ACDsee came up with some conflicts which is surprising as the names are certainly unique, but as there is no Cancel operation button on the warning message (note to any ACDsee developers, this needs to be addressed) I let ACDsee resolve them using its own automatic resolve option.
Now I should have known from experience that anything greater than a simple task causes ACDsee to throw a wobble and true to form, after running for a while it crashed.
I was not too worried as after all, it was a simple rename to remove a prefix and add a suffix so I was just going to start it again with a fewer selected images, but alas that was not the case.
ACDsee has renamed over 5500 of the images with a temporary name Why! My filenames which were something like SS-N9580-12.Tiff is now named something like AeF9.tmp, So not only have I lost the filename, but more importantly I have lost the file type and ACDsee has no idea what type of image it is and refuses to edit it, and I also have no idea as it could be one of many different formats (Jpeg,Tiff,Nef,Raf, acdc,,Psd etc)
What a total %%%% up, I am well and truly screwed.
So I am now running a recovery from a backup disk, its going to take many hours to copy 160K images back back, It is not an ACDsee backup as such as they didn't work very well when I tried them in the past so I am using my normal file sync software I use for other backups, so fingers crossed for me please?
I am now going to go and sob into a beer glass

Try TrID to rename the .tmp files.

Thanks for the help Emil, unfortunately I did not read your post until this morning and by that time last nights restore from backup had finished so I no longer have the tmp files, however I shall make a link to the site as a reference in case the problem reoccurs
The good news is that the restore seems successful and AcDsee is up and running again, I now have the pain of trying to remember what I did yesterday!
      Thanks again for the help
      Steve.
