Collorizing photos ?

Is it possible to collorize old photos with ACDSee ?

I Guess: new layer -> paint -> slide down layer opacity ?

Yes and ACDSee has a tutorial showing how to do it, quite simple actually. There is a variety of ways. One as you discovered is to paint on a new blank layer and varying the opacity of the layer or brush, or you could fill the entire layer with a color, apply a black mask, and paint on the mask with white where you want the color to show.
