  • Ultimate 2023 Very SLOOOOOW: Can I Speed Things Up?

Is there anything I should have done after upgrading? Moving from folder to folder (where there are lots of RAW files) is horrendously slow and ACDSee seems to be doing something continually (there's a percentage counter bottom right that keeps starting over). What is it doing and is there anything I can do to speed it up? Ultimate 2022 never did this.

If you did not transfer your database, ACDSee will re-catalog everything, and even if you did but without rebuilding the thumbnails, at the very least it will need to do that for every folder you open. Now if you keep several thousands of images in your individual folders that takes time and it will bring everything to a crawl. That's my guess based on what you said. So if you have not transferred/converted your previous database do that first. Alternatively run the catalog process, which can take several hour if you have tens of thousands image files. There are several existing posts explaining the process.

Thanks - so what should I do to speed it up? The only thing that I was told to do was convert the database. What I'm looking for is steps I can take or should have taken, please - specifics. Thanks.

When converting did you check the box to also rebuild the thumbnails? If you didn't, and you'll know you didn't if the conversion went relatively quickly, you'll need to either run the Catalog process or open each individual folders and let ACDSee rebuild the thumbnails.

OK - this may be what I missed. I'll give cataloguing a go. Thanks.

There may be a rebuild thumbnails function, I don't quite remember, but look for it. It may be faster than cataloging, which includes reading embedded metadata as well.

LOL! I shall, but it's too late this time. Not to worry - I shall know next time. Thanks again.

My turn is coming, and to make matter worse, I will be switching to a new computer as well. Not looking forward to all the work involved, but I will no doubt appreciate a boost in performance over my 7yrs old box.

I've found the upgrade easy apart from this (clearly my mistake) and the fact that all my export presets need rebuilding. Everything else - actions, develop presets, options, etc. - came through during the upgrade and the Import Options feature. Very easy - easier than I was expecting, to be honest.

My turn is coming, and to make matter worse, I will be switching to a new computer as well. Not looking forward to all the work involved, but hope that I will see a significant boost in performance over my 7yrs old box. Still unsure about the best way to go though; 99.9% of all my images are on an external drive, so technically I can either convert my 2022 database from the old computer to 2023 on the new computer and the drive references should still work, or go through the conversion on the old computer first, and then move the database over. I don't keep the database on the external drive for performance reason.

I'm a few years away from a system upgrade - this laptop is only a year old and has 1TB of storage, so no storage issues yet. Good luck with your upgrade!

I've run the catalogue process and it's now pretty much fine, although when I switch from any other app to Ultimate 2023, the interface is unresponsive for a few seconds. I'll follow this up with support if it continues to be an issue. Thanks for the advice - for future reference, I was told on the FB page that I could have just re-converted the database instead of running the catalogue, so it seems I have a few more options for next time!

I did a convert this time, a recataloging at the previous update. I do not know if one is faster than the other.

The unresponsiveness got worse, so I opened this thread for anyone interested or experiencing anything similar: https://forum.acdsee.com/forum/main-...edraw-freezing
