New main category not possible

I'm confused. Suddenly I can no longer create a main category in U2023. Am I missing something?

Well, who knows? Exactly HOW are you trying to create the category? If I right-click on the categories bar, I am given the option to create a new category.

That's exactly how I do it - but no new main category is created. Creating subcategories works.
I still have U2022 - that's no problem at all...

Maybe something is wrong with your installation? I have U2023 & it works for me. Either right-click or or click on the plus sign to the right of the "Categories" header, and you get the new category dialog.

It might help if you gave some more details. "Doesn't work" isn't much to go on.
If you click on the plus sign to the right of Categories, does anything happen or nothing at all.
Do you not see the Create Category dialog at all, or do you see it but something is different to those screen shots posted by Ellaminnowpea

Everything was fine until a few days ago, creating main categories in Ultimate 2023 also worked. I also installed Ultimate 2022, which works fine there too.

I understand your first screen shot with the highlighted "+" sign to the right of Kategorien.
When you clicked on the "+" it should have brought up the "Create Category" (Kategorie erstellen) dialog which you show in your 4th screen shot.

So in screen shot 4 the button is on "Create new main category" (Neue Hauptkategorie erstellen) and you have named that "Test-1"
Now when you clicked on the OK button at the bottom of that dialog it should have placed the new "Test-1" in the list of categories (in alphabetical order).

But your 5th screen shot shows the "+" sign to the left of "Kategorien" which means that the Categories section is closed, with the People (Menschen) directly below it, and it also appears to show the right click menu content. (which would be correct if you right clicked on the Kategorien heading). You need to expand or open the Category (Kategorien) section to see the individual categories. (Left click on the little "+" sign to the left of Kategorien to expand the section - not right click).

No, not at all. After the OK, the category window twitches a bit - but nothing happens.

That's exactly how I did it. No skin category has been created – nothing.
I've been using the categories almost every day since the 2021 version, so I'm already familiar with them. In the last few days I've also made a lot of attempts, parallel to AC Ultimate 2022.
Creating a main category works with U-2022 – with exactly the same steps but not with U-2023. I already created around 70 categories (with subcategories) with Ultimate 2023 in December. Without any problems.

I was hoping that maybe someone on this forum knows about this behavior. Apparently I'm the only one. Nevertheless, I thank you for the advice here in the forum. It's a real treasure trove, I particularly appreciate Gray Fox's contributions, always patient and very thorough in explaining. Thanks for that!

So tomorrow I will completely uninstall Ultimate 2023 and remove everything related to 2023 or "160Ult" and then reinstall it. I hope that my previously created categories and all keywords (for more than 85,000 files) will be retained....

Possibly once again a database has bitten the dust.

Try optimizing the DB. Then create a new one and import the buggy DB. This issue is very rare and I've never tried this solution myself. 🤞
