  • ACDSee Will NOT Display Any Images

When I first launch ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate it will not display any images, only a small bar at the top of the program that scans back and forth, with the message: "There are no items in the selected folders" which is absurd since my folders are FULL of images.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it? It's very annoying not to be able to work on my images!

Thanks for any and all replies...

When you open ACDSee Ultimate, and providing it can access its database it should do one of two things, depending on the setting you have in Tools/Options/Manage Mode/Default start folder.

    (a) If that is set to Remember from previous session, ACDSee will open in Manage mode in the same folder that was open the last time you used ACDSee, and automatically applies any browsing criteria you were using.

    or

    (b) If that is set to a specific home folder, it will open in Manage mode in that folder, and again automatically apply the browsing criteria that was in effect at the close of the last session.

If the Default start folder in either case is not present, and you have the box ticked for "Show warning if start folder does not exist" then you should see a warning, and when you click on OK in that dialog ACDSee will open with the Windows Pictures folder selected (and it will change the home folder setting to C:\Users\YourName\Pictured. .

What are the Default start folder settings on your installation?.

When ACDSee opens in Manage mode, what folder is selected in the folder tree in the left hand pane (folder Tab), and does that folder actually have any images in it?

In Manage mode, do you have Filter set to "None"?.

Incidentally it may help when you have an issue to provide details of what version and build number your ACDSee Ultimate is, and what version and build your OS is. Also say where your image collection is located (e.g. local drive, external USB hard drive, Network Drive) and also the location of your database (e.g. default on the OS drive.or at a user location)

--The default start folder on my installation is D:\Images which is always present and always populated with all of my image sub folders. Drive D is a secondary local hard drive on my laptop.

--In Manage Mode I do not see a "Filter" setting...

--Version and build of ACDSee Ultimate is 2023 version 16.2.3.3188

--I am running Windows 7 Professional Version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

--Location of my database? You mean ACDSee Ultimate? Default setting, I guess...

      Thanks for the help!

The last folder that I was viewing, one of the sub folders of D:\Images...

Make a note of what that folder is or was, then try creating a new folder on a local drive, with a single JPG image in it, and in Tools/Options/Manage mode, set that as the Home folder. Then close ACDSee and then open it again. As belt and braces I would reboot as well. Does ACDSee start with that JPG showing.

If it does open OK, then in the Folder tree, select the folder you took note of above, and see whether ACDSee displays the images in it.

In regards to Filter in manage mode. The Filter Menu is a pull down menu as shown below

Click image for larger version Name:	Filter Menu.jpg Views:	0 Size:	91.1 KB ID:	64345

Version and build of ACDSee Ultimate is 2023 version 16.2.3.3188
I think that may be a typo and should read 16.0.3.3188 (current version)

Yeah I saw that, but there is no "none" setting. The "All" box is checked.

I should have added in my original post that sometimes ACDSee Ultimate does open to my last folder and display my images, and sometimes is doesn't. It's about 50/50...

No it doesn't open to that folder, even though I set it as Home as you suggested. It still opens to the last folder I was viewing, whatever that was...

Of course, in the Manage Mode settings I have the "Remember from previous session" box checked...

Sorry, my bad. I should have said "All", not "None".

So if in Tools/Options/Manage mode you change that to a specific home or start up folder with just one JPG image in it, as I suggested in my previous post, then when ACDSee starts up, does it show that image?

I think I already answered that--no, it opens to the last folder of images that I was viewing or working on...

Microsoft released Windows 7 in July 2009 ! Not saying that it is the issue, but... obsolescence has limitations.

Yeah, I know. What's your point? Windows 10 is loaded with bloatware, a stupid start menu, stupid tiles, etc. And I will not give up Aero Glass! Windows 7 RULES!

Actually I have one of my other laptops running Windows 10. I took great pains to uninstall all the bloatware, disable all the telemetry, and trick it out with Open Shell and WindowBlinda 11. Still, it's not Aero Glass...

In an ACDSee Ultimate Windows 10 installation there is a registry item that indicates whether ACDSee is to "StartinLastDir", and there is another entry "DefaultFolderPIDL" that points to the Home folder.

If it is set to start in a specific home folder, then the DWORD value for "StartinLastDir" should be 0 (zero). When it is set to start in whatever folder was being used in the previous session that DWORD value changes to 1.

If you can find the equivalent registry items in your Window 7 registry it may give you some indication as to whether the startup settings in Tools/Options/Manage Mode are actually being applied.

If it is the case that start folder setting in Tools/Options/Manage mode is not being correctly reflected in the registry, then I would consider uninstalling and re-installing ACDSee,

OK, I noticed that I had ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 all installed on top of each other in the same folder. So I uninstalled each version individually, re-booted my PC, then did a fresh install of Photo Studio Ultimate 2023. However, I STILL can't view any of my images! There is still a little scanning error box at the top of the program, but instead of saying "There are no items in the selected folders" it says "Retrieving Information". But it just keeps scanning and scanning forever and never actually retrieves any information!

And you have excluded virus checker interference as a possible cause?
