  • "Phantom" Drive Cannot Be Removed

Yesterday, I tried to assign a permanent drive letter to my removable drive in Windows.

It failed the first time I did this (go figure Windows ), so I tried it again and it worked successfully.

But after my first failed attempt at mapping the drive letter, ACDSee now "sees" a drive which doesn't exist.

Do I need to get rid of this? Should I be concerned in the long-run?

    I'd appreciate any advice

If you go to Tools/Database/Database Maintenance, and wait a few seconds, it will probably show up under Removable
Make sure you have the entry for the original USB drive (there might also be an entry for the flash drive with its new drive letter), select the one you refer to as "phantom", then click on Remove all DB Info.
ACDSee will restart when you exit the maintenance dialog and the thumbnail should be gone.

Greyfox I tried that, but didn't have any luck. It's now even weirder--after clicking on it, it now sees it as an actual drive that's physically connected!

Maybe I should just wipe my database...

      Thanks!

I wouldn't do that just yet, particularly if you have a lot of keywords, categories etc that haven't been embedded in your images.
        .
You can start a new database without deleting the old one via File/Database/New. After you give it a name ACDSee will restart on the new database, but you can at any stage change back to the old one via File/ Database/Open.

If the new one doesn't solve the issue then at least you haven't burnt any bridges.

But before doing even that, have you tried running Tools/Database/Optimize Database. Make sure any genuine external drives that have cataloged images on them are connected when you do an optimize.
