  • How do I change the order/sequence of photos within a category?

I can view all the photos in a category together in the middle window but it won't let me drag and drop them into a different order. How do I do that?

    Thanks

Select just a single folder or category, then drag'drop the listed items. AC does not offer this if you list items from several folders or categories. It hasn't got the ability to manage items listed in all thinkable combinations of folders or categories.

The sorting will be saved in the db only. It can't be embedded or exported in to text files. To keep the sorting in a newer version you must use db conversion.

@Dev Team: Why not save the sorting of folders in descript.ion files?

      Thanks, Emil.
The photos ARE in different folders, unfortunately.
Is there a workaround to accomplish this? I see there is a Sort, Image Properties ... Could I put a sequence number in an image property? If so, which property would you suggest?
      Also, would using Collections help?

        1. Create a new category
        2. Assign the items to it
        3. Arrange the items in the order you want with drag'drop
        4. Select all items (CTRL-A) and start batch rename.
        5. In batch rename type the name you want to use and add use "##" (without quotes) to define the sequence number.
        That's it.

If you don't want to rename your originals, but use copies to be moved to some other place then:
        First prepare AC:
        1. Create a new folder on your desktop named "AC Export" (or similar)
        2. In AC go to Tools - Database - Settings for excluded folders
        3. Add the new folder to the list of excluded folders
This has do be done only once.
        Next:
        1. Select all items you want to use and start batch export.
        2. In Batch Export export all selected items in to the new folder
        3. Browse the new folder
        4. Arrange the items in the order you want with drag'drop
        5. Select all items and start batch rename.
        6. In batch rename type the name you want to use and add use "##" (without quotes) to define the sequence number.
        Done.

        Hope this helps

BTW. Afaik same restrictions apply to the collections. I don't know, I don't use them.

          Emil,
Thanks very much for the detailed explanation! I'm grateful. Don't be mad, but I really don't want to create 2 sets of photos to maintain. I was hoping to put the ## number in some unused metadata property.
Is there some trick to doing drag'drop in ACD? It doesn't to work the same as in other programs. Maybe I have to be in a certain View ...
