Reverse Hierarchy

I have recently come across family photos from a previous generation,
not included in my initial Category setup.
I presently have: People <Family <Smith <John <Robert <William
Can I now add a new sub-category "Joseph" between Smith and John?
If I simply add Joseph as a sub-category of Smith, Joseph would appear
on same level as John as brothers as opposed to father and son.

Well you can (at least in Ultimate, not sure about other versions).
1. Add Joseph as a sub-category of Smith.
2. In Manage mode, in the left hand pane, select the Catalog Tab, then expand the Categories section
3. With the left mouse key held down, drag John down onto Joseph
