  • Edit old keywords of old pictures [home 2021] metadata question

    Hi,

    1) I am moving old pictures ( 70.000) to ACDSee home 2021. Among those pictures some have inadequate metadata, for instance a keyword contains an old value such as 'Building" where I now use "Architecture" instead of "Building". Is there a way to change "Building" into "Architecture" for all pictures having "Building" ?

    2) I usually define a location for pictures country/region/city/place, those fields exist in XMP metadata. Many of my pictures have the same location, so it would be nice to have a catalog tree of hierachical locations : countries with regions, regions with citys ... so it easier to fill those informations (some DAM have it). Is this possible with ACDee (even in pro or ultimate) ?

    3) Is there a way to edit IPTC metadata for several selected pictures (not only one) ?

    Thanks from a newbie.

      1) It's not clear to me whether your keywords are IPTC keywords, or ACDSee Keywords. and I personally don't have ACDSee Home version, only Ultimate 2021, but from a quick read of the Home 2021 manual, the answer either way would appear to be YES.

The approach should be basically the same in Home 2021 to that in Ultimate 2021, but would be slight different for changing IPTC keywords in multiple images to changing ACDSee keywords in multiple images..

      2) ACDSee has limitations as to what XMP metadata it uses. You can however arrange ACDSee keywords in a hierarchical setup for example:

      Country
      |_Region or state
      |-State
      |_City
      |_Location

and them them from the keyword listing as appropriate for an image, or group of images to embed in the images. Those keywords also can then be simply copied to IPTC keywords using Metadata Presets.

ACDSee also allows access to fill in IPTC specific fields for Country, Country code, City, Location, however that would be more manual a process..

      3) Yes, can definitely be done in Ultimate and as far as I can see from the Home 2021 manual, you should be able to do it in the Home version as well.

Thanks, I am testing Pro version.

1] I am using IPTC Keywords? I did not find a way to globally change them.
2)) This is a good idea but keywords do not go into the right place for locations (I think I shall use another DAM that has this function before sending images to ACDSee
        3) Thi is possible in Pro not Home : in Home, selecting several pictures closes IPTC tag.

          1) no you can’t change them globally. You have to use their proprietary keyword if you want to have access to full power over keywords.
          2) no, there isn’t a hierarchical tree for the locations.
          3) you are right, it is not possible in home

I am in a process to change to another DAM after 3 years with Acdsee because of proprietary keywords, no location tree, no stack, no version.

In Ultimate, you can select multiple images and edit the IPTC fields. The bulk selection however must NOT contain any image formats that do not support IPTC, and perhaps more importantly, whilst it can contain RAW images, it must not contain any associated XMP sidecar files. So if you have Filter->Advanced Filters->Show XMP files ticked, and the sidecar files are showing next to their respective raw files in the File List pane. then when you do a multiple selection (Click ->Shift Click) then the side car files are also selected, and in the metadata pane, the IPTC metadata fields will NOT show. If the "Show XMP" files filter is un-ticked then with the same selection the IPTC fields will show and the fields can be edited.

Thanks to all. For 1) and 2) I shall use another DAM in free version (Daminion) which perfectly manages locations and keyword renaming. For 3) probably shall change to Pro version. Images shall go to Daminion as frontend (locations) then to ACDSee (and removed from Daminion since free version limits total number of pictures).
